When you go to smoke your favorite cigar you need two things, a cigar lighter and a cigar cutter. There are 3 basic types of cigar cutters, the wedge or v cut, the straight cut and the hole punch. Choosing which cutter to use it based on personal preference and the size and shape of the cigar you want to smoke. The most commonly used cigar cutter is the straight and is most always used on a cigar with a small ring gauge.

The straight cigar cutter is the most basic. It is used to make straight cuts using a sole or double guillotine blade. Most cigar aficionado's use the double guillotine version because it makes a cleaner cut. The guillotine cigar cutters are the most practical, can be easily and safely stored and are the least expensive.

The hole punch cigar cutter is used to put a small hole in the cap of the cigar as apposed to just cutting it off completely. The hole needs to be big enough as to not impede the smoke draw. Also, if the hole is to small it can cause a build up of tar that can affect the taste as well as the draw.

The wedge cigar cutter or v cutter resembles the guillotine cutter. It differs in the fact that the shape of the blade cuts a wedge into the cap of the cigar as opposed to cutting it off. With it's unique design, this cigar cutter slices from one side and at the same depth to avoid any danger of cutting too deep.

Choosing a cigar cutter is not complicated. Try all three variations out and see which one you prefer. Cigar cutters can be found in your local cigar shop or online. Be sure to read reviews on the various cigar cutters to help in your decision making.
